Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The ex-president was sentenced of plotting a armed takeover in last fall and handed more than 27 years in incarceration, but he continued under confinement pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after recent developments were revealed.

This involved attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a public vigil that could enable a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the custody, Justice Moraes said data from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the tracking monitor to ensure success in his flight.

His child, Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a gathering of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.

He said the gathering would be so followers could "pray for his well-being and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."
